About the Founder

Hi there, my name is Ayesha Mohammed. I’m a qualified social worker and psychotherapist living in Australia.

I was born into a Cape Malay Muslim family in South Africa. When I first started doubting Islam, I was sure the shaytaan (devil) was manipulating me. Years later, I realised that what I thought was demonic influence was actually my ability to think critically.

Leaving Islam was the scariest, loneliest and most liberating experience of my life.

I know what it’s like to go through it alone.
I created Elsewhere so others don’t have to.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor of Arts (Law) | Master of Social Work | Master of Education | Master of International Relations and Counterterrorism

After obtaining full registration as a social worker, I specialised in mental health and psychotherapy, gaining 5+ years of counselling and case management experience. I’ve worked in a range of challenging, high-risk environments, including frontline suicide prevention, locked mental health wards and forensic settings.

In 2021, I led the design and delivery of the world’s first international group therapy program for Ex-Muslims. By 2025, the program had reached more than 200 people in 60+ countries.

What is the Elsewhere Initiative?

  • A graphic showing three beige human figures with a large question mark on the middle figure, indicating a question about identity or selection.

    Who We Are

A community that came together seeking growth, connection and a new chapter beyond Islam.

  • An illustration of a light bulb with a question mark inside, surrounded by light rays.

    What We Do

We provide therapy, tailored group support, an online community, and a platform to amplify Ex-Muslim voices.

  • A simple icon of a person holding a sign with a question mark.

    Why It Matters

Leaving Islam is punishable by death in 12 countries, yet there is almost no support available for Ex-Muslims.
